New Abstract Submission Deadline: November 24, 2023
Workshop Date: March 22-23, 2024
The Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IHPST) at the University of Toronto is pleased to announce the call for abstracts for our annual graduate workshop. This year our theme is A Piece of the Action: Participation and consumption in/around science. Submissions are due November 24, 2023 to hapsatconference@gmail.com.
Who has the privilege of being given a voice in developing new technologies? What makes some forms of citizen science legitimate but not others? How have social movements and medical discoveries transformed the doctor-patient relationship? What affirms legitimate contributions to scientific knowledge? We welcome proposals from graduate scholars in history, philosophy, and other disciplines whose work relates to the theme.
Please submit an abstract of less than 250 words, a one-page CV, and specify whether you would like to attend virtually or on-site in Toronto. Proposals are due by November 24, 2023 and can be sent to hapsatconference@gmail.com. Clearly state the main argument of the presentation and how it connects with the theme. Presentations not related to the theme will also be considered. We intend to respond to all proposals by November 30th, 2023.
The workshop will take place on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23, 2024. If accepted, participants will present a 30-minute presentation on a 3000-4000 word paper. Participants will receive comments from a faculty member affiliated with the IHPST before opening the floor for general Q&A. As such, we will require that accepted presenters submit their full papers in early February. Accepted papers will have the opportunity to be submitted for publication in Spontaneous Generations, a Journal for the Institute of the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology. We will be running the workshop hybrid, and though there is no fee, we cannot cover travel or accommodation costs.
Thank you,
