The History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (HAPSAT) Graduate Students Society announces the publication of a special issue of Spontaneous Generations. Matthew J. McLaughlin, the editor of this peer-reviewed, open-access journal, provides insights into the contents of this issue:
This new edition includes several papers that were first presented at the graduate workshop titled “A Piece of the Action: Participation and Consumption In/Around Science” hosted on March 22-23, 2024. Following the event, several participants were invited to revise their papers and submit them for publication with the journal. As editor of this issue and co-organizer of the workshop, I curated this special edition to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the workshop. We have published articles written by graduate students working in the history and philosophy of science, medicine, and technology. The topics studied by these authors include psychedelics, diagnostic practices in psychiatry, extended virtues, and the importance of women’s travel writing for botany. Alongside the articles, you will find commentaries written by IHPST faculty, affiliates, and postdoctoral fellows. Their commentaries highlight the contributions of the works while critically evaluating arguments proposed by each author. I am happy that the innovative perspectives published in this issue of Spontaneous Generations reflect the interdisciplinary and cutting-edge nature of our institute and hope everyone enjoys engaging with their works as much as I did.
