Abstract

Dietary risk factors are now the leading cause of ill health globally, surpassing tobacco, and are a major contributor to Canada’s top causes of death: cardiovascular disease and cancer. Yet fewer than 23% of Canadians meet recommended fruit and vegetable intakes, while red meat and dairy consumption remain more than double recommended levels. Strong evidence shows that diets centred on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds reduce chronic disease risk, promote longevity, and support health across all ages and stages of life. Beyond chronic disease, meat-heavy diets fuel antibiotic resistance, pandemic risk, climate change, ecological breakdown, and contribute to social and environmental injustice, further undermining health. National and international authorities are calling for change: the Canada Food Guide promotes a plant-based plate; the EAT-Lancet Commission shows plant-predominant diets could save 11 million lives annually while safeguarding planetary health; and the Lancet Countdown Canada Report, in collaboration with the Canadian Medical Association, identifies dietary shifts as a top priority for climate-health action. Taken together, these connections show that no human activity has broader and deeper impact on human and planetary health than our food system. We have a moral imperative to advocate for plant-based nutrition for the health of our communities and the planet.
